How to Prepare Your AC for The Summer Heat
The summer heat can be brutal on your AC unit. If you don’t properly prepare it for the season, you could be in for expensive repairs. Inefficiencies or cooling inconsistencies mean that your comfort and utility bills will be higher than necessary. To avoid these problems, take the time to prepare your AC unit for the summer heat. Here is how to do it.
Replace The Filters
Old, dirty filters impede airflow and make the AC unit work harder than necessary. This puts unnecessary stress on the system and can shorten its lifespan. It also circulates dirty air throughout your home.
To keep your AC unit running efficiently and your air quality high, replace the filters every three months during the summer months. Get filters with a high MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating if you’re concerned about allergens.
Clean The Condenser Coils
Condenser coils are located in the outdoor unit of your AC system. They release heat from the refrigerant to circulate back into your home. Over time, these coils clog with dirt and debris. This reduces their efficiency and makes your AC unit work harder.
First, turn off the power to the AC unit at the breaker box to clean your coils. Remove the fan to access the coils. Gently brush away any dirt and debris with a soft-bristled brush. If the coils are extremely dirty, wash them with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before putting the fan back in place.
Check The Coolant Levels
The coolant, also known as refrigerant, removes heat from your home. If the coolant levels are low, the AC unit won’t correctly remove heat, and your home will feel warmer than usual. You can check the coolant levels yourself, but it’s best to leave this task to a professional. They will also recharge the system if needed.
